China Foundation Development Handbook launched at the 3rd China Private Foundation Development Forum
November 23rd, 2011
On November 24, the 2011 China Private Foundation Development Forum was held in Beijing focusing on the mission and social responsibility of the private foundation sector. 15 organizations make up the organizing committee including Narada Foundation, Vantone Foundation, Bright China Foundation, and Beijing Western Sunshine Rural Development Foundation. The forum was attended by more than 300 leaders, experts and researchers from the government, research institutions, foundations, nonprofits and media.
At the forum, BSR’s CiYuan Initiative launched its new China Foundation Development Handbook. A key part of the CiYuan initiative, the handbook was developed by BSR with support from CBAC, COHDand SRI. It can be downloaded here.
This Handbook has been developed as a ‘go to’ for individuals and companies interested in understanding the principles behind establishing a private foundation and the key elements of operating a foundation such as developing a mission and strategy, governance practices, and human resourcing including utilizing volunteers. Some of this content will also have practical applications for more mature foundations or other non-profit organizations.
As this Handbook is only a starting point for the collection of case studies and resources to guide the development of Chinese foundations, we hope that members of the foundation community can continue to build on this guide with their own tips and experiences to make it an even stronger, practical Handbook.
